Electric Bicycles in America

Paonia, CO - Optibike inventor Jim Turner is proud to announce that the company has now officially been building custom, handcrafted high performance electric bicycles for 10 years. On a mission to manufacture the best quality E-bikes in America, Optibike sells its products all over the world, so far to people in over 33 countries.

Inventor, President and Founder Jim Turner graduated with an advanced degree from Stanford and initially began working as a Design Engineer for Ford Motor Company. But he needed more of a challenge, and when he learned about the concept of electric bikes he realized that this was an industry that could help change people’s lives for the better.

And as countless testimonials show, the Optibike has most certainly achieved that:

“The Optibike…helps me stay strong on my bike at 61 feeling like I am 20 again. What an awesome time I have on the R11.”

“I love my Optibike R8 All Around electric bike…I am able to commute from Sioux Falls South, Dakota to Cameron, South Dakota which is over 31 miles one way with lots of rolling hills.”

“Riding the Optibike makes me feel free! It actually makes me forget I am sick. I’m not able to ride a ‘normal’ bike…my legs get too fatigued and eventually go numb. With the power of the Optibike, I was able to pedal without the pins and needles…”

The first Optibike was sold in 2006, and since then the company has achieved a stellar reputation for performance and durability. But the Optibike team will never allow themselves to rest on their laurels. The product is continually evolving, to the point where the current R15 model has 3.8 times the power of the 2007 model (which incidentally was dubbed “The Ferrari of Electric Bikes” by the New York Times in 2007.)

“We don’t want to be the biggest; we just want to build the best,” explains Turner. “I feel so proud of our success. And many of our customers are now ordering their 4th or 5th Optibike, which tells you a lot about how much people love them!”

Optibike’s product line has expanded a great deal over the last few years. Customers can now choose from a diverse range of bikes depending on the level of power and performance they require.

Warranty support and reliability issues on a bike that goes over 40-MPH can be a nightmare, and technically none of these bikes are legal on USA or European roads. This was a very hard and laborious list to compile.

A few months back we did a list of the 10 fastest home built electric bikes. Now here is a list of the top-10 fastest commercially available ebikes for those who want to go out and spend the big money, and buy a speed machine. It is very hard to build and sell a fast electric bike to the public (read our article on the high cost of speed). Warranty support and reliability issues on a bike that goes over 40-MPH can be a nightmare, and technically none of these bikes are legal on USA or European roads.

This was a very hard and laborious list to compile. You cannot do it like the car industry does, and just get these ten electric bikes to show up at a runway in the desert, and do some shoot-out speed tests. Only 3 of these bikes for sure exist, and are for sale in the United States…the Optibike, the Stealth Bomber, and the FFR Trike.

After those 3, it starts to get foggy…especially when it comes to speed claims.

The electric bike industry is full of inflated numbers and vaporware, especially this high end part of the market, and this list attempts to sift through the BS and get to the straight beef. Many of the bikes on this list exist in a “we will build when you give us your money” status, meaning the company could go under and you never get your bike. So therefore we base this list on a bunch of criteria, not just pure speed, and rate the bikes accordingly.

This list is very speculative because of the mysterious nature of many of the bikes on this list. We have done our best to identify the critical factors which make these bikes viable speed machines. We reward these machines for being more like an e-bike than a motorcycle. Undoubtedly our estimates will create some controversy but we have done our best to honestly rate these machines.

You can see how we came up with our estimated rankings in each category at the end of this story.

There are 10 bikes in this list. Bikes are ranked 1-10 according to top speed, reliability, no vaporware, sexiness, weight and price. The lower the ranking number the better. Performance rankings are added together and the lowest numbers = our top rated fast bikes. (total rank score)

* = estimated performance number.

#1 Optibike 1100R (read review)

Optibike made it to the top of our list not because it is the fastest electric bike, but because it is a well rounded and balanced machine that still looks and feels like a bike. This is a mid-drive electric bike that you can actually squeeze-in an extra 5-MPH by pedaling hard, where as most of the other bikes on this list are so big and heavy that pedaling will make little difference. The Optibike has a quality full-suspension frame, and can ride on rugged rough road.

It earned its #1 reliability ranking by having over 20 bikes make it to the top of the Pikes Peak race (a 20 mile long, 8000 foot elevation climb), as well as selling 100′s of bikes to the public, with many satisfied customers.

Claimed speed : 40MPH (with pedaling)
EB estimated top speed: #9 *35-MPH
Reliability: #1 (dominated Pikes Peak bicycle race for 2 years)
No Vaporware: #1 (we know this bike is for real and has been in production for over 10 years)
Sexiness: #4
Weight: #4 60lbs (impressively light-weight, given its long battery range and full suspension)
Stealth: #2 (looks like a 90′s y frame mountain bike…..feels like a bike)
Price/affordability: #5 $14,500
EB Total Rank Score: 26

Bob’s story is one of inspiration, dedication and a life-changing goal.
Bob Brewer is a regular guy. He spent his life building a successful family business. The money was good and all the perks that came with it were even better. Then at age 53, he found himself overweight, way overweight. And diabetic. He was 5’7” and 270 lbs. The doctor called him ‘morbidly obese’. That’s when fear set in.
A young death just wasn’t an option for Bob. So what was a guy like Bob to do? A little exercise for a few days wasn’t going to fix the problem. An entire lifestyle shift was in order. But it sounded so hard and complicated. That is when Bob joined the Optibike Weight Loss Challenge with coach Traci Brown.
The Optibike Weight Loss Challenge is a year long coached lifestyle and fitness program. A community is created around the enthusiasm for weight loss and cycling with the Optibike. Optibikes are the perfect match for the challenge. Being electric, the Optibike gives a push when the rider needs it. The intimidation factor is gone. The rider gets a great workout, can push their athletic limits, and get some assistance when needed.
Bob found fun, along with success, in the Optibike community and started riding his Optibike every day. He followed his program closely and monitored his progress. The program consisted of riding every day with a specific plan, walking if he couldn’t ride, eating lower carbohydrates, less meat and more fish, cutting out soft drinks and alcohol, Bob has only had water to drink for a year.
The results: Bob has lost 89lbs and he’s still going. He is exercising every day, riding his Optibike and walking, and totally off all medications. He is excited about life and he still has not had anything to drink but water. And all this happened because he decided to save his own life with the Optibike Weight Loss Challenge.
Why ride an Optibike for weight loss? Optibikes are the Ferrari of electric bikes. They’re fast, sleek and fun. When beginning to lose weight they are the perfect fitness equipment. Riders get a great workout outside, a push up the hills when they need it and all the fun of experiencing the speed of a Tour de France peleton.

It was a low-speed sprint, with Bloomberg TV anchor Matt Miller wending his Vespa around the crosstown traffic I was stuck behind. My top speed was 15 mph. So I decided to test two rather unusual but very green options — a $12,000 electric bicycle and a $19,000 street-legal golf cart.
